Joe Clark, 22 from Newcastle, who is currently completing a Civil Engineering Apprenticeship at the Port of Tyne, has been commended for achieving the Institute of Civil Engineers Quest Technician Scholarship.

Quest scholarships are a sign of excellence - only five people in the North East and 53 students in the entire country received this accolade this year.

Joe has been an apprentice at the Port of Tyne since 2013 and gained the highest mark possible in his BTEC level 3 course. He is now working towards his HNC in Civil Engineering.

Joe said: “I’m in the third year of my apprenticeship with one year still to go. It has given me valuable work experience as well as a great education – for me my apprenticeship at the Port of Tyne has been far better than going straight to University from school.

“The Quest scholarship will provide useful grant funding to help with the cost of studying to further develop my career in engineering.”

Louise Tinkler, Head of Human Resources Port of Tyne, said: “Joe’s commitment has been really impressive and it is great to see him rewarded by the Institute of Civil Engineering - Joe is among 16 apprentices at the Port.”
